Christening of Jordan Dean Halloran
November 4, 2001

Terry: John and Melisa, what name have you given to your child?

John and Melisa: Jordan Dean Halloran.

Terry: John and Melisa, what do you ask of God for Jordan Dean?

John and Melisa: Baptism, faith and eternal life.

Terry: John and Melisa, you have asked to have Jordan Dean christened. In doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training him in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring him up to keep God's commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?

John and Melisa: We do.

Terry: Doctor Bob and Dawn, are you ready to help John and Melisa in their duty as Christian parents?

Doctor Bob and Dawn: We are.

Terry: Jordan Dean, the Christian community welcomes you with great joy. In its name I claim you for Christ our Savior by the sign of his cross. I now trace the cross on your forehead, and I invite your parent and Godparents to do the same.

A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans:

We died to sin: how can we live in it any longer? Have you forgotten that when we were christened into union with Christ Jesus we were christened into his death? By baptism we were buried with him, and lay dead, in order that, as Christ was raised from the dead in the splendor of the Father, so also we might set our feet upon the new path of life.

The word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

Terry: My brothers and sisters, let us ask our Lord Jesus Christ to look lovingly on Jordan Dean who is to be christened, on his parents and Godparents, and on all the members of God's family.

By the mystery of your death and resurrection, bathe Jordan Dean in light, give him the new life of faith and welcome him into your family. Make him your faithful follower and witness to your Gospel. Lead him by a holy life to the joys of God's kingdom. Make the lives of Jordan Dean's parents and Godparents examples of faith to inspire him. Keep his family always in your love. Renew the grace of faith in each one of us.

Almighty God, you sent your only Son to rescue us from the slavery of sin, and to give us the freedom only your sons and daughters enjoy. We now pray for Jordan Dean, who will have to face the world with its temptations, and fight the devil in all his cunning. Your Son died and rose again to save us. By his victory over sin and death, bring Jordan Dean out of the power of darkness. Strengthen him with the grace of Christ, and watch over him at every step in life's journey. We ask this through Christ the Lord.

All: Amen.

Terry: Jordan Dean, may you have strength in the power of Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

All: Amen.

Terry: My dear brothers and sisters, we now ask God to give Jordan Dean new life in abundance through water and the Holy Spirit.

Father in heaven, you give us grace through signs which tell us of the wonders of your unseen power.

Here we use your gift of water, which you have made a rich symbol of the grace you give us through belief in your Son.

At the very dawn of creation your Spirit breathed on the waters, making them the wellspring of all holiness.

The waters of the great flood you made a sign of the gift of faith, that makes an end of sin and a new beginning of goodness.

Through the waters of the Red Sea you led Israel out of slavery, to be an image of God's holy people, set free from sin by faith.

In the waters of the Jordan your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Spirit.

Your Son willed that water and blood should flow from his side as he hung upon the cross.

After his resurrection he told his disciples: "Go out and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

Father, now look with love on your people gathered here today, and unseal for us the fountain of faith. By the power of your Spirit give to the water of this font the grace of your Son. You created us in your own likeness: cleanse us from sin in a new birth to innocence by water and the Spirit.

We ask you, Father, with your Son to send the Holy Spirit upon the water of this font. May all who are buried with Christ in the death of baptism rise also with him to newness of life. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Terry: John and Melisa, Doctor Bob and Dawn, you have come here to present Jordan Dean for baptism. By water and the Holy Spirit he is to receive the gift of new life from God, who is love.

On your part, you must make it your constant care to bring Jordan Dean up in the practice of the faith. See that the divine life which God gives him is kept safe from the poison of sin, to grow always stronger in his heart.

Terry: (pouring the water): Jordan Dean, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Terry (touching Jordan Dean's christening robe): Jordan Dean, you have become a new creation, and have clothed yourself in Christ. See in this white garment the outward sign of your Christian dignity. With your family and friends to help you by word and example, bring that dignity unstained into the everlasting life of heaven.

Terry (lighting the candle): Jordan Dean, receive the light of Christ.

John and Melisa, Doctor Bob and Dawn, this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. Jordan Dean has been enlightened by Christ. He is to walk always as a child of the light. May he keep the flame of faith alive in his heart. When the Lord comes, may he go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom.

May God, the source of life and love, who fills the hearts of parents with love for their children, bless Jordan Dean's parents. As John and Melisa thank God for a safe delivery, may they find joy in the love, growth and holiness of their child.

May God, who loves all people, bless all the relatives and friends who are gathered here. In his mercy, may he guard them from evil and give them his abundant peace.

And may almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless you.

All: Amen.
